Primary Research Photography

These photographs will be used in my final project for the promotional material.

These first 3 photographs were taken in Turkey, they will be used to develop the background setting for my poster design.

These photographs were taken in Dundee of the famous Discovery Ship, this ship will also be used throughout my promotional material designs.

Poster Layout

For my poster design I began to think about the composition of the main focus on my poster - The Discovery ship. During this research I found that some angles work better than others, such as front side views - This is what I would take into consideration when carrying out the photography stage.

Developing my Game Title

When developing my game title I primarily began to look at titles which have already been used and how they were displayed. This then allowed me to mind map ideas by looking at words which were associated with pirates, after this process I looked at different combinations of words which would develop my title. During the typography research I found that most fonts were displayed on a neutral background with a contrasting colour.

T-shirt Design

When researching my Tshirt design I found that most children's tshirts have one design as a main focus point - I wanted to incorporate this into my design also. I thought an ideal approach within my tshirt design would be to have the logo as the main focus with elements from my poster design to make it more interesting.

Poster Design Research

When designing my poster I decided to research pre-existing pirate poster designs for inspiration on layout and colour. I found common colours used within this theme includes blues, reds, dark yellows and black. I decided that I wanted to create the poster on paper which looked old - like the sterotypical pirates would use for maps etc. I also decided that i wanted my main focus to be of The Discovery Ship situated in Dundee, which I would take my own photographs of as primary research.

Developing the game logo

Through my logo design research I found that most common pirate logos involve skulls and weapons which I didn't believe would be appropriate for my young target audience, therefore I began to research compass designs. I believe that this would work well as a logo design as it is not too complex but it is interesting.
